July 13, 2021
I don't remember the last time I added anything to my events page. The corona virus changed so many things. So I will start with the book signing that I did on July3 at the Deer Clan Bookstore in Bethany. It was nice and I sold two books. On July 15, this next Thursday, I am the luncheon speaker for the OKC Exchange Club which meets at the Greens Country Club. I will speak on writing historical fiction. Then on August 29, I will speak at the Steeplechase Book Club on writing historical fiction books. And in the spring I will be speaking at a book club on one of my books. We haven't decided which one yet. So things are going well, and I love doing this. I will give more info later. April 19, 2020
This is an important day to those of us who live in Oklahoma--it is the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Murrah Building here in Oklahoma City--a day that all Oklahomans will never forget. Because of the corona virus, I had to cancel all my speaking events and my trip to Perry for the History Days event. I am sad that his virus has changed all our lives, killed so many people and made so many sick, and pretty much cancelled life in general. I feel fortunate that I am well and healthy and so is all my family--we have practiced stay at home. But hopefully one day soon, we will all be able to get back to our new normal. Last Friday, March 7, I gave a talk to the Indian Territory Posse of Westerners. I spoke on the Civil War and read several of my great great grandfather's letters home to his wife, Laura. I have copies of 18 of his letters (and one real letter). They tell of his thoughts about the war, camp life, the other soldiers, battles. He was with the 25th Arkansas Infantry under McCown and McNair in the Army of Tennessee. He was wounded at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Bentonville. Had some interesting conversations about the war after the talk.
Yesterday, February 8th, I gave a talk to the Wordwrights OKC Christian Book Club. I spoke over Getting Your Book Published and Then Promoting It. This was such a nice group of people and I enjoyed talking with the group members. I hope I could help them. I also sold 3 Last Real Cowboy books and 1 Journey of the Cheyenne Warrior book. Fun day.
January 17, tomorrow, I am giving a book review over Journey of the Cheyenne Warrior for the Criterion Book Club at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. This will be my first talk for the new year, 2020. I will give another talk on February 8 for the Wordswright OKC Christian Writers Club. I will speak on ways to promote your book. Looking forward to both these events.
I have another speaking event in March, and then I will participate in the History Days at Perry in April. Getting busy--and have two books coming out this spring and hopefully this summer On October 2, I gave a talk to the Retired Engineers Group. I spoke on "Vanity on the Plains--Plains Indian Men's Jewelry, hair, and paint." I think everyone enjoyed learning that these ideas have been important throughout time to every culture.
On October 17, I am giving a talk to my Civil War group. It is on Milroy's Occupation of Winchester (Va.) during December, 1862, through June, 1863. Actually it is a pretty interesting topic as Winchester, located in the Shenadoah Valley, changed sides over 70 times. It was important for railroad, roads, food, etc. and both Confederates and Yankees wanted it. July 26 The radio show did not happen. That day a bad storm hit Dallas and knocked out the broadcasting tower. I have lined up a couple of talks and Christmas market for sales for this fall and winter. Slow summer.
This next Sunday, June 9, I will be doing a radio interview for a program out of Dallas called Beyond Bows and Arrows. I was asked to do this interview and talk about the Journey of the Cheyenne Warrior book, Last Real Cowboy, and my new one that I am working on, Spirit Journey: Sunshine's Song. I think this will be interesting. This goes out to the Native American community--Cheyenne.
On May 4, I did a book signing at Barnes & Noble. Only sold one Last Real Cowboy book, but met lots of friendly people.
April 12, 2019 I went to the Cowboy and Western Heritage Awards cocktail party for the winners of this year's awards. It was such an amazing evening. Of course, I always love to hang out at the beautiful museum. Several movie actors were there and I talked with them and had my picture taken with a few of them -- Patrick Wayne, Rex Linn, Michael Martin Murphy, Reba McIntire, and most exciting of all was Kevin Costner. He is such a nice and humble man. He gave such a poignant talk for the awards night program. He is still my favorite actor, director, and producer.
April 9, 2019 This last week I finished the most interesting series of talks on the Bison as American Icon at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. This was a brown bag lunch talk for an hour on 6 Thursdays. Each talk was by a different expert and I certainly learned a lot.
Also this past week I went to a Civil war Symposium at Randal University for two days. This was another fascinating series of talks, and I met some interesting people and saw old friends. What a week! I love learning about history. On December 1st, I participated in Jingle Jam Christmas Market at Piedmont Intermediate School. 4rvpublishing had a booth for a few authors to sell books. It was great fun and there were lots of wonderful Christmas items for sell. I sold two books, so I was happy.
And I am very happy that my next book is getting published, Spirit Journey: Sunshine's Song. Yesterday, November 20, I went to a symposium on the Battle of the Washita at the OKC History Museum. It is the 150th anniversary of this horrific massacre near Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Several important historians gave talks about this day and its meaning, even mentioning the Sand Creek massacre and the massacre at Wounded Knee which I have written about in my books.. We had a nice luncheon. It was impressive to see so many people interested in this story.
I am giving a talk on November 28th to the Retired Engineers Club. I will be speaking about the Cherokee Outlet Land Run of 1893. I spoke to this group last fall about the Chisholm Trail, and they were an enjoyable group so I am looking forward to visiting again and also getting a nice lunch.

Just found out that my next manuscript was accepted to be published. Spirit Journey: Sunshine's Song (originally titled Will My Song Be Heard Sunshine's Lakhota Journey) is about a young Cheyenne girl who becomes a member of the Lakhota Sioux tribe. This story includes chapters on Fight at Little Big Horn, Ghost Dancing, and Wounded Knee. So just how did she come to live with the Lakhota?
Saturday, September 15, I drove to Ponca City to the Pioneer Woman's Museum to give a talk on the Cherokee Outlet Land Run in 1893. Sunday was the 125th anniversary. Well, no one showed up for the talk --disappointing--but I did visit with the museum people there and still had a great time.
Last Saturday, the 16th, I gave a talk for the OKC Writers' Club. I spoke about promotion Ideas, and everyone seemed to enjoy what I said. We had a lot of interaction with the group--lots of questions and some new ideas for me. As usual, I had a great time and enjoyed visiting with some new people.
On Friday, April 20,and Saturday, April 21, I was invited to the Chisholm Trail Museum in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, for their Living History Days. It was a fun couple of days and lots of people showed up both days. Most all the folks were dressed in Civil War period clothing or in uniforms or cowboy clothes. I sold 7 books, so it was a good weekend for me. The rain did not damper anyone's sprits. I hope to get to go back again next year.
Last Monday, April 9, I spoke about the Chisholm Trail at the Mustang Historical Society meeting. We had a great time, the people were all very nice. I got to tour the museum, small but packed with wonderful memorabilia. Sold 4 books. The evening was a success in my book.
February 18 Went to my book signing yesterday at Full Circle in OKC. A small crowd showed up for us--there were about 6 authors at the tables. Met some interesting people. Didn't sell any books, but that's OK. Talked to the other authors and got some new information on selling.
I have been invited to come to History Days one weekend the end of April at the Chisholm Trail Museum in Kingfisher. This will be a fun day. Easier to sell books at a history event in a museum. February-- I have a book signing Saturday the 17th from 3 to 5 at Full Circle Book Store in OKC. Really looking forward to getting out and selling books again.
November 14 Tomorrow I will be giving a luncheon talk for an Engineers group. I will share information about the history of the Chisholm Trail and then talk a little bit about "Vanity on the Plains' which is on the hair styles, jewelry, and body painting of the Plains Indian.
The next day, I will be giving a dinner talk for my Civil War group on the Battle of Franklin in November, 1864. I have book signings in Duncan on October 21, maybe Kingfisher in November, Full Circle on December 16, and then Barnes & Noble sometime in May.
I plan to drive to Blackwell and Perry to check out their museums for the Cherokee Land Run in 1893. Yesterday, September 20, I drove to Duncan and visited the Chisholm Trail Museum and then the library. I set up a book signing at the library for October 21 They will have a big day with authors and writing workshops, lots of things going on. I will have to change my book signing at Full Circle here in OKC until December 16.
I also have 3 or 4 talks to give this fall about different subjects. This is always fun. The book is out! I have been to several museums such as the History Museum and the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum in OKC and have left a book for them to read before deciding to order copies. Last Friday, September 15, I drove to Enid to visit the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Museum. It is a beautiful museum filled with lots of inside and outside exhibits to see. Hopefully, they will include my Last Real Cowboy in their book store. This coming Wednesday, September 20, I am driving down to Duncan (the start of the Chisholm Trail) to visit with the library and Chisholm Trail Museum about a book signing or a talk. I shall then make my way up along Highway 81, (the Chisholm Trail), stopping to visit places along the way. Kingfisher has a very nice museum and they have asked me to possibly give a talk.
Getting ready to do the final proof edit for the Last Real Cowboy. So hopefully it will be out soon. I think readers will really enjoy this book and learn a lot of history and interesting facts. I did tons of research. My greenhorn cowboy rides the Chisholm Trail. This year is the 150th anniversary of the trail.
Later in June I drove to Kansas City for the Western Writers of America Conference. It was wonderful and I met so many interesting and friendly people from all over the USA. It is composed of not only book writers, but song writers and poets. We went in a group to visit the Arabia Steamboat Museum and the Nelson Art Museum. In addition to the friendly and fun people, they had a breakfast, dinner, and social hour for us. We listened to several talks about Kansas City history and some famous people. In the evenings the singers entertained us with their music. Next year it will be in Billings, Montana. WOW! This is a great group to be in.
I did drive back out to the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site/Black Kettle Museum in Cheyenne, Oklahoma,on June 4 and gave a talk on Cheyenne Women in the 1800's. They informed me that the board chose to include my book in their bookstore. I was very proud and happy about this.
Next Thursday, April 20, I will be the guest dinner speaker for the Civil War Round Table group. I will be speaking on Varina Howell Davis, wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Drove out to Cheyenne, OK, last week to talk with the people at the Black Kettle Museum on the Washita Battlesite. They are reviewing my Cheyenne book for possibly putting it in their bookstore. They asked me if I would be interested in coming back out and giving some talks about the Cheyenne people at the museum this summer and I said yes, I would.
I found out yesterday that my book, Journey of the Cheyenne Warrior, is being read in some history classes in the Malibu, California, area. The high school students are reading the book, discussing the events, and then writing about it.
I am very happy to say that I have been accepted into the Western Writers of America organization.
November 19, yesterday, my Civil War book, Death of Innocence, won 3rd place in the Oklahoma City Writers' Club fall contest. The judge gave it all excellents and very goods on the scoring. She said, " very appropriate title, given the subject and characters, captures the time in history and the essence of youthful enthusiasm and innocence, Heart breaking to know (kind of) what they were blundering into." This book will probably come after I finish with the last two books on the Indian group. I was the luncheon guest speaker yesterday, November 17, for the Daughters of the Confederacy. The topic was Writing about Your Family. I was treated to a free lunch.
October 21 My second book, Last Real Cowboy, has gone to press. We are waiting for the cover page to be designed. Hopefully it will be out soon.
I have been asked to be the guest speaker at the United Daughters of Confederacy in November. I will be speaking on how to get started on finding your ancestors. Went to the History Museum here in Oklahoma City last week and found out that all 5 books they had in their bookstore have been sold. This is good news since my book, Journey of the Cheyenne Warrior, is the only fictional (historical) at the museum. Everything else is non-fiction. Sold a book at the Old Town Museum in Burlington, Colorado. Left 3 on consignment last summer. Now there are 2. July 8---I have just returned from a wonderful adventure to Wyoming. I drove 3 grandsons to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. We took 9 days--not nearly long enough. It was quite personal and interesting for me to see the land, cross the rivers, visit the towns that I have been writing about in my books. I was happy to be able to leave 3 Cheyenne Warrior books on consignment at the gift store in Old Town Museum in Burlington, Colorado. I spoke with the lady in charge of the gift/book store at the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne. She took my flyer and a card to think about. The Laramie Plains Museum took one book, then ordered 5 more which I mailed her last week. The woman in charge of the Grand Teton Association wanted to have a book and will present it to their board which meets again in September. She seemed very excited. All the places were also very much interested in my cowboy book. I loved Wyoming! It was as beautiful as I had imagined. I am hoping for good things to happen from this trip. And I can't wait to go back there.
I was a guest luncheon speaker yesterday for an adult learning group at St. Luke's Methodist Church. I gave a review on my Cheyenne book. They seemed to enjoy learning about the culture and traditions.
On November 21 and 22, I was invited by the Indian Art Club to sell my book at their Indian Arts and Crafts Fair at the Norman Fairgrounds. I did sell several books and met some very nice people.

I have been asked to co- teach a writing class for OLLI. The class will meet on Wednesdays from 1-3 for six weeks beginning the end of September. I believe the small class is about writing memoirs, so it should be an interesting experience for all of us. I believe I will be reading the stories and giving suggestions and ideas about making the work smooth. I'm sure I will learn a lot!
January 2, 2022
I gave a talk about my Cheyenne Warrior book for the Steeplechase Book Club the end of August. It was a dinner meeting. On November 14, I gave a talk at dinner to the Chisholm Book Club. I sold 6 books at Dodge City, Kansas, to the Boot Hill Museum. Their museum is very well done and most interesting if you are looking for a short get-away trip. I worked the Christmas Market at Putnam City North High School around the first weekend of December. We had a booth set up and several state authors were there to sell and sign their books. I was happy that I sold 3 books--1 Cheyenne Warrior and 2 Last real Cowboy books iI am going to be guest speaker for lunch in February for the Greens Book Club. I will talk about my Last Real Cowboy book since I have not given a talk on this book yet. In April, I will talk at lunch to the Criterion Book Club at the OKC Golf and Country Club. I will also speak about the Cowboy book. .May 3, 2022 , My book talks went very well for the Last real Cowboy. I did an animal shelter event last Saturday at the Yukon Animal Shelter. I set up a table for my book India Finds a Home. It was a nice event. Even though I only sold one book, the woman took a picture of the book and said she wanted to put it on her Facebook page to show others. She works with Mustang Animal Shelter. I was happy about this.
I am doing an author book signing at Best of Books in Edmond on Saturday, May 21. It is 12 to 2 and should be lots of fun. I will have India Finds a Home at this store. |
The Civil War Round Table group has asked me to be their December speaker. I will talk about Christmas in the Civil War camps and read a couple of my ancestor's letters home at Christmastime.

I have been invited to be a guest speaker at a writers' group in OKC in January. I will talk about writing the historical novel. Another good lunch.
A couple of weeks ago, I was the guest speaker for the Daughters of Indian Wars group. I spoke on Cheyenne women and had a nice lunch at the Quail Creek Country Club. The ladies were all very interesting and friendly.
Next week I am speaking to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. I will read some on my great-great grandfather's Civil War letters and have a good lunch. This is really quite fun to speak to these different groups.
A friend of mine who works at the Oklahoma History Museum got the book store to sell 5 of my books there. They did not order them before because they only sell non-fiction books, but they are willing to take a chance on my books. I was excited about this.

The group of Daughters of Indian Wars has asked me to be a guest speaker at their August luncheon meeting. I will be talking about the Role of Cheyenne Women in their Culture and I will dress in my Cheyenne clothing.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy have asked me to be a guest speaker at their September meeting. I will be reading several of my great great grandfather's letters that he wrote to his wife Laura during his soldiering with the Army of Tennessee. Frank was wounded three times yet managed to fight till the end of the war. His letters give an insight as to the feelings of the Rebel soldier towards the war and also concerns about home.
I have been retyping the memoirs from a World War II Marine colonel friend of mine. His story has been fascinating to read because he was in charge of an amtrac on Guadalcanal and other Pacific campaigns. I will try to help him get this published.
Yesterday, Tuesday, I spoke at a church luncheon group on the Role of the Cheyenne Women in their Culture. I dressed out in my Cheyenne outfit and talked to a fairly large group of women and a few men. They were all very interested in learning about the Cheyenne and asked many questions. I even had one lady ask me if I would speak to another group which meets again next fall. I agreed. It was a nice day, got a wonderful lunch, received a $25. gift card to Full Circle Bookstore, and sold 4 books.
Last Saturday was the Oklahoma Writers' Conference here in OKC. I went to the awards banquet and enjoyed watching many of my friends receive awards for their hard work. My cowboy story did not get any award, but I got some good comments on the scoring page. I think I am on the right track and hopefully can get this book edited to be the best.

I attended the Western Heritage Awards Banquet last night. It was quite an event and I had a wonderful time. I saw actors, writers, singers, and met many interesting people. I plan to go again next year and hopefully have my cowboy book entered in the contest. The lady from the bookstore also told me she only had two books left in her store and would need some more soon. I love going to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. It is such a marvelous museum and storehouse of artwork and items of the past.
I found out that my Cheyenne book did not win the Western Heritage Book Award but I plan to go to the banquet awards dinner next month anyway. It should be a very colorful and interesting evening to say the least. And I can talk to people about my book, so it should work out. I can relax and enjoy the festivities.
I will have a live interview on March 24. The permalink is: http://pennylockwoodehrenkranz.blogspot.com/2014/kathleen-gibbs-journey-of-cheyenne.html Check it out...
Last Sunday, I participated in the Edmond Authors Book Fair. I met some new people and got reacquainted with some old friends, sold a couple of books, and met a lady who was looking for some guest speakers for her writing group. I told her I would be happy to speak any time, so she took my card. No pay, but a good lunch at a Chinese restaurant.
I also got a call last week from a lady who wants me to speak at her book club in May. She heard my talk at the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and wants me to dress out and give the same program.
I am answering some questions for an interview on someone's blog. I was thinking that after I answer her questions, I would post them on my blog.

In my spare time, I am now beading a dance stick and will be beading and decorating a pair of dance leggings. I have already made one pair of leggings--it's not so hard, but very time consuming.

On September 16th, I will be the guest speaker for the group of Docents at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum about The Role of the Cheyenne Women in their Culture in the 1800's. Hopefully, I can give them more information to use when they are giving tours.
I really enjoyed my talk at the Cowboy Museum. I got to talk with some old friends and meet some new ones. It was also nice to be able to dress out in my Cheyenne outfit--everyone seemed to be interested in my dress and my beadwork.
I have been asked to write a series of columns for the Oklahoma Anthropological Society's newsletter, Trowel Marks. The first one is for the summer edition 2013, and the topic is Role of Women in Cheyenne Culture. The next column may be on hair, jewelry, paint.
I have been asked to help promote American Indian authors in Oklahoma and will be working on this project for the fall.
I have also been asked to be a judge for a writing contest this fall. I am in the process of reading high school students' short stories.
